Becoming a Perfumer: Required Qualities
A perfumer is a skilled professional with knowledge in biology, a highly developed sense of smell, and an excellent understanding of the market and new trends.
The perfumer is a key figure in the company for which he or she works.
The future popularity of a product often depends on him or her.
The perfumer must have scientific knowledge. He or she must also have an understanding of chemistry and biology. This knowledge is used to better utilize the molecules at his disposal to create a fragrance and minimize the risks of harmful effects.
The perfume creator is an artist. He must show empathy and put himself in the shoes of future buyers to offer them the best possible product.
He must demonstrate imagination and stand out from other perfumers. The perfumer must know how to innovate and create several fragrances.
The perfumer's role is to create a fragrance. To do this, he must play several roles:
• Create unique fragrances from various scent samples. He must blend the scents to obtain a fragrance that will make the product a success.
• Adapt to the product for which the fragrance is intended. The work is different when creating a fragrance for a high-end perfume, a shower gel, or a laundry detergent.
• Ensure that the fragrances meet the requirements set by the International Fragrance Association (IFRA).
He must also ensure the absence of harmful effects by referring to the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM).
• Conduct tests with a sample population and be able to revise his work if necessary.
• Have an impeccable sense of smell and be able to recognize scents.
